Lucknow (Vatsal Verma) : In the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is unavailable due to personal matters, wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel took on the role of captain and chose to field first against Australia A.

On a day when the Indian pacers, Mohd Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, appeared to struggle in securing wickets for India A, the young slow left-arm spinner Manav Suthar capitalized on the situation by achieving a five-wicket haul, marking his fifth in first-class cricket. This presented an ideal opportunity for both Siraj and Krishna to make a significant impact ahead of the upcoming two-Test home series against the West Indies, commencing on October 2 in Ahmedabad.

However, both bowlers faced challenges in claiming wickets on the mixed soil pitch at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Siraj, who had been a pivotal bowler for Team India during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series in England, where he took 23 wickets, managed to dismiss key Australian opener Sam Konstos only after conceding 73 runs in his 13-over spell, as the visitors concluded the day at 350/9 in 84 overs. Conversely, Krishna bowled 14 overs, claiming the wicket of opener Campbell Kellaway in his second over of the day after allowing 63 runs at an economy rate of 4.50 runs per over. Pacer Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is also in contention for a spot on the Team India for the West Indies series, delivered a consistent eight-over spell, giving away just 16 runs with two maidens, yet he did not take any wickets. Part-timer Ayush Badoni conceded 25 runs in eight overs but failed to secure a wicket. Manav Suthar excelled on the first day of the competition with his exceptional bowling performance, while Nathan McSweeney and Jack Edwards managed to counter with a solid batting display. The Australians managed to set a respectable score in response to India’s impressive bowling effort in Lucknow. Australia A lost an early wicket, with opener Campbell Kellaway dismissed for nine runs. However, Sam Konstas and captain Nathan McSweeney contributed significantly with scores of 49 and 74 runs, respectively. Oliver Peake added 29 runs, while Cooper Connolly was dismissed for a two-ball duck.
