Dhananjaya de Silva hit a career-best 93 while Maheesh Theekshana took three important wickets to ensure Sri Lanka’s pole position in the Super Six leg of the ICC ODI World Cup qualifiers in Bulawayo on Friday. Sri Lanka now have six points from three games and are likely to finish among top two and qualify for the October 5 to November 19 tournament proper in India. On the day, Dhananjaya’s 111-ball knock studded with eight fours and two sixes helped Sri Lanka recover from 96 for six to post a below-par 213 in 47.4 overs. Theekshana then took three wickets in the space of two overs to derail the Dutch chase as they were all out for 192 in 40 overs. Wanindu Hasaranga took 2 for 53. Netherlands didn’t start the chase well, losing both their openers for ducks, but Wesley and Bas de Leede added 77 runs for the third wicket and sent the cat among the pigeons in a small run-chase. However, Barresi’s run out opened the gates for Sri Lanka and Maheesh Theekshana tilted the game in his team’s favour significantly by picking up three wickets in back-to-back overs. Hasaranga also chipped in with a couple of wickets as Netherlands were bowled out for 192 with 10 overs to go despite Scott Edwards, who scored 67*, keeping his side in the hunt but ending up short of partners.
Scores: SL 213 in 47.4 overs (de Silva 93; van Beek 3-26, de Leede 3-42) beat Netherlands 192 in 40 overs (Edwards 67*; Theekshana 3-31) by 21 runs
