Rain played spoilsport on the first day of the Test match between South Africa and West Indies, with only 15 overs possible.
South Africa’s Score: South Africa opted to bat first and scored 45 for 1, with Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi opening the batting.
Markram was dismissed by Holder, while Zorzi remained unbeaten on 32 off 52 balls. Play was called off due to rain and will resume 30 minutes earlier than scheduled on Day 2.
Spin, introduced in the eighth over courtesy of Gudakesh Motie was attacked by de Zorzi, who favoured the matchup. He hit two sixes off the left-arm spinner with a slog sweep over mid-wicket and another over long-on. de Zorzi punished any loose deliveries, with boundaries in successive overs of Seales and Motie.
Jason Holder struck gold first ball, sending skipper Markram back to the sheds. His stumps were castled as the ball bowled outside off, came in sharply off the deck and uprooted the off stump. Markram was rushed, didn’t get any feet movement and the ball went through the bat-pad gate.
The rains followed soon after, unrelenting and the covers were saturated with water. Play was called off just before the scheduled tea break as the heavens had the final say. Play shall commence 30 minutes earlier today (Day 2) as it was called off early due to the rain on Day 1.
