MCN News

In a significant move to strengthen their batting prowess ahead of the crucial Test series against England, Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed Ian Bell, a former stalwart of the English cricket team, as their batting coach. The decision to bring in Bell, known for his elegance and technique at the crease, is a testament to Sri Lanka’s intent to not only compete but to excel in conditions where they have historically struggled.

Ian Bell, who represented England from 2004 to 2015, amassed 7,727 runs in 118 Test matches, averaging 42.69 with 22 centuries and 46 half-centuries. His career, adorned with accolades and marked by his adaptability across formats, makes Ian Bell an ideal mentor for the young Sri Lankan batsmen. The appointment comes at a crucial juncture as Sri Lanka gears up for a three-match Test series beginning August 21, with games scheduled at Old Trafford, Lord’s, and The Oval.

  1. The collaboration between Bell and Sri Lanka’s interim head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, is also something to watch. Sanath Jayasuriya, a legend of the game himself, brings a different dynamic to the team, and together with Bell, they form a coaching duo that combines tactical acumen with a deep understanding of the game’s mental and physical demands.

As Bell prepares to join the Sri Lankan team on August 16, the cricketing world eagerly awaits to see how his influence will unfold on the pitch. His journey from a celebrated England player to a key figure in the opposition’s camp is a narrative that adds a fascinating layer to this series. For the young Sri Lankan batsmen, this is an opportunity not just to learn from a former adversary but to absorb the essence of Test cricket from someone who has played the game with both skill and spirit.

“We appointed Ian to bring in a person with local knowledge to help the players with key insights on the conditions there,” Sri Lanka Cricket chief executive Ashley de Silva said.

“We believe his inputs will help our team in this crucial tour.”S ri Lanka appointed former skipper Sanath Jayasuriya last month to replace head coach Chris Silverwood, who quit following the country’s early exit from the T20 World Cup.

Jayasuriya, 55, will be the “interim” coach until a full-time appointment is made for the national team.

Jayasuriya represented Sri Lanka 586 times across the three formats of the game, hitting 42 centuries and taking 440 wickets. He played his last international in 2011.
