Chasing the target of 176 in 17.1 overs, the Proteas virtually secured their place in the Super-8s. South Africa put on a superb performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, defeating New Zealand by seven wickets to virtually secure a place in the Super-8s.

Captain Aiden Markram’s explosive 86-run innings helped the Proteas achieve the target of 176 in just 17.1 overs. With this victory, South Africa recorded their third consecutive win in Group D and moved to the top of the points table. Batting first, New Zealand had an aggressive start. Tim Seifert (13 runs, 9 balls) signaled his intentions with a six off Marco Jansen, while Finn Allen (31 runs, 17 balls) gave the team a quick start by hitting a huge straight six and a four off Lungi Ngidi. The team quickly reached 33 runs. Marco Jansen then turned the match around with his bouncy bowling. He first dismissed Seifert and then Rachin Ravindra (13). Allen, who was looking dangerous, was also caught by captain Aiden Markram. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj bowled Glenn Phillips (1) to leave New Zealand at a precarious 64/4 in seven overs.

At this point, Mark Chapman (48 runs, 26 balls) and Daryl Mitchell (32 runs, 24 balls) steadied the innings with a crucial 74-run partnership. Chapman hit six fours and two sixes, scoring quickly, while Mitchell batted sensibly. Both eased the pressure and put the team in a strong position. However, Jansen made a comeback, dismissing Chapman before he could reach his half-century. Mitchell also couldn’t last long after that, and captain Mitchell Santner departed cheaply. Finally, James Neesham made an unbeaten 23 to guide the team to a respectable 175/7 in 20 overs. Marco Jansen was South Africa’s most successful bowler, taking figures of 4/40. Keshav Maharaj took 1/24, and Corbin Bosch took 1/34.
Chasing a target of 176, South Africa adopted an aggressive approach from the start. Quinton de Kock (20 runs, 14 balls) provided a quick start, though he couldn’t last long. Ryan Rickelton (21 runs, 11 balls) then maintained the run rate with a quick run. Captain Aiden Markram displayed a brilliant batting performance. He reached his half-century in just 28 balls and kept the pressure on the New Zealand bowlers throughout the match. Markram played an explosive innings of 86 runs, which included 8 fours and 4 sixes. His strike rate was nearly 200.

A quick 40-run partnership between Rickelton and Markram took the team past 100 in 8 overs. Dewald Brevis (21) was dismissed midway through the innings, but the team faced no pressure. Finally, David Miller (24 not out) supported Markram, and together they achieved the target in just 17.1 overs. Miller ended the match by hitting a powerful six over midwicket off Lockie Ferguson. South Africa won the match by 7 wickets to register their third consecutive win in Group D and take a strong step towards the Super 8.
