Zimbabwe stunned West Indies by 35 runs in a crucial World Cup qualifying triumph on Saturday Zimbabwe, put into bat, made 268 with Sikandar Raza top scoring with 68 from 58 balls, hitting six fours and two 6. Ryan Burl added a crucial 50 with five fours and a six after Zimbabwe had been 112-4 at one stage while skipper Craig Ervine made 47 at the top of the order. In reply, West Indies were well-placed at 134-3 before they lost seven wickets for just 99 runs. Opener Kyle Mayers top scored with 56 off 72 balls featuring eight fours and a six.
A lively crowd witnessed a great 35-run victory by Zimbabwe over favourites West Indies at the Harare Sports Club. It all started to go wrong for WI with the new ball, which Joylord and Criag Ervine took advantage of, but a collapse of 3 for 27 saw Zimbabwe back to rebuilding, which Player-of-the-Match Raza did with aplomb. Raza and Ryan added 87 runs for the fifth wicket before a very handy last-wicket stand of 25 runs between Muzarabani and Chatara got the hosts to 268. A large part of why Zimbabwe got there was down to four dropped catches by the WI fielders: Raza on 1 and 7, Burl on 39 and Muzarabani on six.
While defending the total, Tendai was expensive upfront but returned to pick the crucial wicket of Holder when he was going strong with Roston Chase. To start with, WI lost both their openers in the powerplay but Mayers and Hope added 64 stabilizing runs for the third wicket. Masakadza picked Mayers soon after his fifty, Hope was bowled by Raza soon after and that’s when the chase started sliding. Chatara’s dismissal of Holder then turned the tables on WI and the bowler went on to add a couple more to his tally to wipe the WI lower-order.
